The IE3 motor and the new efficiency classes

The new standards for the efficiency level of electric motors categorized as IE1, IE2 and IE3 have been made in order to reduce the overall global CO2-outlet. The efficiency classes are developed by the IEC (the International Electrotechnical Commission). The key standard, IEC 60034-30-2008, categorizes 50 Hz and 60 Hz motors from 0,75 kW to 375 kW in accordance with their efficiency level. Before this standard was implemented, different regulations applied to the different European countries. At Lönne we supply IE1, IE2 as well as IE3 motors from our selection of electric motors. Furthermore, we offer permanent magnet motors that are available as IE4.

Why is an IE3 motor more efficient?

In the construction of an IE3 motor, cobber is used as the conductor material for the squirrel cage instead of aluminium. This leads to a considerably reduced rotor loss which is one of the main reasons why the IE3 motor is far more energy efficient compared to other motors. At the same time, the torque curve in the operating area is steeper and the breakdown torque can attained with a considerably lower slip. However, replacing aluminium with cobber cannot explain entirely why the IE3 motor is more energy efficient than the IE2 motors. The flux-optimization of the windings and the smaller winding head is also a considerable key component in the energy saving design.
